    Mapping the EA Ecosystem

    Over the years, I have been gathering links and metadata about enterprise architecture relevant resources, books, and most recently, academic articles. I share this over at EnterpriseArchitecture.dk.

    Back in 2005, I called it my personomy. Over the years, it has become quite a large collection with over 1500 resources. I try and tidy up dead links etc. as I discover such, but I also keep adding new resources. My inclusion criteria are fairly simple: The resource must be relevant to enteprise architects, or otherwise be something I find worth including. I’m sure I could add much more than I do, and always welcome suggestions.

    I’ve come to realise that I have created a data source that I can use to map out the EA ecosystem. I have created a visualization of my data with Kumu.io:

    We would like to announce a call for papers for the 11th conference of the European Academy of Design, www.europeanacademyofdesign.org, to be held in Paris Descartes University Institute of Psychology on April 17-19th, 2015.

    The theme of the conference is the value of design research.

    Design today is increasingly being recognized as creating value – whether for cultural and collective intelligence, for embedding new technology into new behaviours, for fostering or acting as a force for change in societies and for companies confronted with complex problems. This value is based on design research within a large variety of settings and scientific backgrounds.

    The gestalt of the conference is “the whole is more than just the sum of its parts”. Taking this principle to heart, the conference will bring together all stakeholders in design research and design process innovation. University labs, design schools, and R&D departments from industries have been invited.

    Submissions

    Abstracts

    Abstracts should specify the research question, give bibliographical references, mention the research methodology, the findings and describe the objective in terms of value.

    Abstracts should be less than 500 words in length. They summarize the paper, and should not provide any identifying information about the author(s).

    Workshops

    Some tracks will be best illustrated through a workshop experience so we welcome ideas on workshops during or before the conference.

    Full Papers

    All papers will be double-blind peer-reviewed.

    Full papers should be between 3000–5000 words in length. We welcome any research approach or type of paper including conceptual, empirical and critical literature reviews. However, we expect high standards of scholarship within the papers in terms of establishing the theoretical context, explaining the methods of inquiry, and reporting results that may aid other researchers.

    Best papers will be published in a Special issue of Design Journal.

    Reviewing Process

    All abstracts and papers need to be submitted via our conference management system. Abstracts will be assessed by members of the Academic Committee. If accepted, authors will be invited to submit a full paper. To submit your abstract, please follow these steps:

    1. The conference management tool will be active starting March 31st, 2014. You will need to and to create your account.
    2. Once logged in select ‘Your Submissions’ and then click “Submission of Abstract”. First, include all the authors and affiliations. Then, provide the abstract title and the text of your abstract (maximum 500 words).
    3. Please select the track(s) that you wish to be considered for, and provide keywords describing your submission. You can include any comments for the Academic Committee. Then click “Proceed”.
    4. Your abstract will be stored in the CMS and passed on to the relevant track chairs for consideration.
    5. If successful, you will receive an email notifying you and giving you details of further steps.
    6. If successful, you will also be also required to upload your full paper to the CMS following a similar procedure. Full details will be provided in due course.

    FEAPThe Federation of Enterprise Architecture Professional Organizations (FEAPO), a “worldwide association of professional organizations which have come together to provide a forum to standardize, professionalize, and otherwise advance the discipline of Enterprise Architecture (EA)”, has announced and published their EA Perspectives White Paper, ”Common Perspective on Enterprise Architecture”.

    The Great Debate — what is enterprise architecture — resolved in a new paper, writes Stephen Ibaraki in a commentary/promotion article. The White Paper itself is slightly more modest:

    As with any profession or practice, there are many definitions, perspectives, and schools of thought surrounding Enterprise Architecture. This paper addresses a shared goal among Enterprise Architects to evolve the practice from a fragmented, often poorly understood field to a “real profession,” on par with well-established professions such as accounting and engineering… This paper provides a high level description of Enterprise Architecture and what it can do for an organization, removing much of the jargon that often surrounds such efforts. It was written to provide insight into what Enterprise Architects do, what kind of skills are needed, and what results an organization should expect from their Enterprise Architecture efforts.

    The EA Voices Apps have been updated. The Android version is now in Google Play, and should flag up if you already have it installed. The iOS version is being reviewed by Apple now; this may well take a while.

    The new version has a new look and feel, as seen to the right. The main design idea was to make it look and feel more consistent throughout the app, which – it being a hybrid app – also means more like the EAVoices.com website.

    The website and hence also the app uses responsive design to optimize both portrait and landscape mode. To the right above is the portrait mode, and below is the landscape mode:

    I know a standard use case is to conduct a search, so I put a big fat search bar right in your face 🙂

    The last link, Glossary, is a new feature: A glossary of enterprise architecture terms and definitions (yes, the same as on EAGlossary.com). Click term to search for it in the database.

    The Themes link is an attempt at giving an overview of what is talked about in the community. I am looking into ways to dig into the over two million words in the database. I have upgraded the search mechanism, and although it is not the fastest search in town, it does a great job in finding good search results.

    For browser-based use, I also created a small “bookmarklet”:

    Just drag-and-drop it to your bookmark bar, and then click that whenever you highlight a term somewhere, and get direct search results.

     

  • Beyond Alignment Book

    frontcover-201x300I am pleased to announce that our new book, Beyond Alignment: Applying Systems Thinking in Architecting Enterprises (ISBN 9781848901162) is now available via Amazon.com, and should be available internationally any day now.

    The book is a comprehensive reader about how enterprises can apply systems thinking in their enterprise architecture practice, for business transformation and for strategic execution. The book’s contributors find that systems thinking is a valuable way of thinking about the viable enterprise and how to architect it. The contributions to the book have been collected over the past couple of years and continuously been edited by authors and editors. As the Danish poet Piet Hein said, T.T.T., Things Take Time (Ting Tager Tid). We hope you will enjoy the result.

    FAREWELL

    I have decided to step down as Chief Editor of JEA, and this number will be the last number under my editorship. I have been serving the EA community over 100 peer-reviewed articles over the past three years, and now need to focus more on my own work. It’s been a privilege working with the contributing authors, the reviewers, the editorial board, and the AEA staff.

    Thank you.

    I decided to step down because I envisioned another direction for JEA than what the AEA management had in mind. I will leave it to AEA to talk about their plans for the future of JEA.

    There is an Easter Egg over at EA Voices.

    Dear EA bloggers,

    Thanks to you, EA Voices is a great source of enterprise architecture wisdom. Now aggregating blogs and writings by over 100 bloggers, the database is rounding 2 million words, and grows with around 100 posts monthly.

    I think all this wisdom deserves even more attention than the website and apps can offer, and want to put EA Voices in print in the form of a book. I will publish the book, so it’ll be available on Amazon etc (print and digital).

    I therefore invite you all to dig in your own blog archives, including all those drafts I know you sit on, and write up a chapter/essay for the book.

    1. What theme? As long as it is something of relevance to enterprise architecture, it’s up to you! When we gather the troops some themes may well flesh out.
    2. Target group? The primary target group is the enterprise architecture community, including aspiring architects, but possibly also others, such as CxOs.
    3. Number of words? Well, up to you, but I suggest shorter essay-ish chapters, so maybe around 2500 words?
    4. By when? Soon. Let’s get this thing out sooner than later! How about submission by 1st May?

    • Practitioners can “go back to school” for a week to get new inspiration. Practitioner pack can include a small project/assignment proceeding the summer school and a formal exam.

    The EA Glossary Android App

    In the first post about my first app, I quoted Tim Berners-Lee, who says “every single web page out there, if you like, is like a computer” with reference to HTML5. I took one single HTML5 web page and turned it into something “like a computer”, namely an app. I mentioned that Gartner talks about hybrid architecture, which “combines the portability of HTML5 Web apps with a native container that facilitates access to native device features.” For reasons I don’t think I’m allowed to share, this first app of mine will not be available in Apple’s App Store.

    EA Voices App for iPad and iPhone

    In my continued learning about hybrid apps I started a second app initiative: EA Voices, the app. For the EA Voices website, I had recently found a nice responsive HTML5 theme for WordPress. Wrapping that up in an app, as I ended up doing for the initial app prototype, does involve a number of challenges, but clearly also has some advantages. It was of course specifically the mission to get the app into both app stores.

    I focused on creating a hybrid app that loads the most recent content from EA Voices, and then allows users to read that or find something else to read “in the app” – which is technically EAVoices.com being loaded. Thus, the complete EA Voices database is available “in the app” – as long as the app is online. Offline functionality out of scope, for now.

    I first tried working out a “proper” JSON API approach for loading content in the app, but my technical skills limit forced me to return to good old RSS and javascript based XML parsing. I have not been able to fully align to the WordPress theme on the app index page, which could look nicer than it does now. The finer art of optimizing an app is however beyond this initial exercise. The source code is in GitHub and the app builds are in PhoneGap’s cloud.

    Before I spent more time on refining the app, I wanted to know whether it would break any app store policies. The only way to find out, I thought, was to submit a “good enough” app and then wait and see. Fortunately, this app no 2 of mine made it into both Apple’s and Google’s app stores, I am pleased to announce.

    Other platforms: Get the PhoneGap builds.

    The app is essentially a fully functional appification of EAVoices.com. As an app, it needs some optimization work – it is a bit sluggish to launch. If people start using it, I promise to work on improving it 🙂

    (I have found the first bug, a missing menu on some platforms, sorry)

    I also now embark on my third app initiative. You may well be able to guess what it is, if you know me, but I’ll go under the radar on this for some time.
